This week's installment of "Around the World..." takes us to Curaçao, an island in the southern Caribbean Sea, right off the Venezuelan coast. The newly formed country is the largest and most populous of the three ABC islands (for Aruba, Bonaire, and Curaçao) of the Lesser Antilles, and has become a noted travel destination since dissolving from the Kingdom of the Netherlands in 2010. Frommer's named it one of their top destinations of 2012 (along with Beirut, Kansas City, and the Yukatan Peninsula, go figure!) and Condé Nast Traveler proclaimed it as one their top "Honeymoon Hot Spots" because of its "hurricane-proof location, world-class diving, and guaranteed sunshine."
Lisa was lucky enough to take a trip to the Caribbean island two years back, and wrote in to share her story about the friendly feline natives!
She writes:
I enjoy your 'Around the World in 80 Cats' posts! I could not resist sending you pictures of some kitties I met in Curaçao when I vacationed there in 2010. I met them at different beaches and resorts throughout the island.
Beach kitties - friendly cats clearly enjoying the beach, sand, and lounge chairs as much as everyone else!
Resort kitty - We found this stealth black cat roaming the grounds of a resort.
Stalker kitties - Found these cats hiding in the grass stalking a rooster and its babies. I'm happy to say the kitties never pounced!
Visitor kitty - this beautiful, sweet cat appeared on the patio of where we were staying one day. It's as if she knew there were cat people staying there! We substituted grass as a cat toy, eventually tiring her out! We also gave her some water before she left. She came back to visit a few more times during our stay. She had a collar, so we guessed she must have lived nearby.
