Kim Kardashian Got A Kitten For Some Reason

Kim Kardashian announced the newest addition to the Kardashian klan this weekend: A Teacup Persian kitten named Mercy. The reality star was caught by paparazzi stalking around a marina in Miami with her sister Khloe, sippin' Starbucks while toting around the tiny ball of fluff, who was reportedly named after a Kanye West song. (Note to Kim: Having a cat out near a body of water without a leash, with a ton of scary photographers around is a really dumb idea).

Kim shared a few photos of Mercy on Twitter, while Khloe also posted pix of herself with the cat, along with Kardashian pal, Jonathan Cheban. The sisters are in town to begin filming a show, so I don't know if the kitten figures into those plans somehow, or if she's just trying to cash in on the cat fashion craze and will start appearing with Mercy in photo shoots, à la Choupette Lagerfeld.

I do think it's unfortunate that Kim would buy a kitten and hope it doesn't start a trend of people purchasing (and subsequently abandoning) the cats as a novelty, much like the tiny dog craze that fellow socialite Paris Hilton sparked years ago with her teacup Chihuahua, Tinkerbell.

Kardashian is not exactly known for her love of animals, or for her knowledge of cats in particular. In April 2010, she was criticized for being photographed holding up a black kitten by the scruff of its neck during a photo shoot.

Why couldn't she have rescued a shelter kitten? Shelters are overflowing with animals that need homes and she buys a "designer" cat? Very irresponsible, but that's what we would expect from her. Hope her relationship with the kitten lasts longer than her marriage did.

and what the heck is a "teacup" Persian anyhow? would that be like a potbelly pig that only stays small cause of bad breeding or lack of nutrution? great - now people will want one cause she has one.....argh

Cute kitten, but why not adopt from a breed rescue? Come on Kim, do something useful with your fame - like encouraging people to adopt!

teacup kitty? really? *shakes head*

I can't agree more with you about having the kitten outside with out a leash/harness/carrier. I so really hope she doesn't have to learn the hard way... nor anyone else who will see her then think it is perfectly OK to carry around a cat/kitten this way.

I'll bet the poor little thing has been declawed too.

So many Persians have respiratory health problems from being inbred to develop their distinctive flattened face. Most also are not capable of keeping their long fur clean and quickly develop mats without additional daily human grooming care. I really don't see the need to encourage breeders to mold cats into more and more extreme and novel looking cats just because of human vanity and Ms. K. is the epitome of vanity and attention-mongering over substance and forethought.

Poor kitten. I hope when the cute wears off, Mercy gets handed off to someone with a more developed sense of responsibility who will take proper care of her. I don't see the Kardashians as being capable of providing a proper forever home to any animal.

I hope she treats that kitten the way that all cats deserve to be treated...

The poor kitten doesn't look very happy in any of those pictures... :(

I think the kitten was a gift from current flavor of the (month?) Kanye West. He purchased the kitten as a gift for Kim. Apparently she has "always wanted one". I believe at one point Kimi dear had a little dog I'm not sure if it passed or was given away but I've yet to see that Juicy Couture wearing pup around. That said I think a cat may be a better fit for the jet setting "Celeb" if she can manage to leave it at home and make sure it i's well taken care of.

There's no such thing as a teacup persian cat; it's just a made-up name. The persian breed standard is for a larger cat. I adopted a tiny 4 year old persian from a high kill shelter. He was in pitiful shape. He now weights around 6.5 lbs., within the range of so-called teacup persians. I lovingly call him a product of irresponsible breeding.
