Architects For Animals Project Showcases Hip Housing For NYC's Feral Cats

Dana Edelson

When you think of New York City's great landmarks, buildings like The Empire State, Chrysler, and Guggenheim, all come to mind. However, a group of prestigious architects from around the city have teamed up to create some very important pint sized designs, all for the benefit of feral kitties.

Architects for Animals, now in its third year, is an initiative held in cooperation with the Mayor's Alliance for NYC's Animals, to help bring awareness to the city's homeless cat population.

Since cats need winter shelters to help protect them from freezing temperatures, the architectural teams are tasked with building stylish, innovative outdoor shelters, that are put on display, and ultimately donated to community cat caretakers around the city.

This year's "Giving Shelter" benefit will be held on Thursday, January 10 at the Steelcase Showroom in NYC. Admission is a $20 donation ($10 for Certified TNR Caretakers) and includes the debut of this year's designs, hors d'oeuvres, and drinks. If you can't make it to the event, online donations to the New York City Feral Cat Initiative are also accepted, and appreciated. The program aims to humanely reduce the number of community cats in NYC, and improve the plight of those cats currently living outdoors through the humane, non-lethal method of Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR).
