Baby the cat is lucky to be alive after an Arizona house fire claimed nearly all of her nine lives. Paramedics in San Tan Valley used a kitty-sized oxygen mask to resuscitate the feline, after she was rescued and appeared lifeless on the scene.
The special pet oxygen mask was donated to the fire department a few years ago by staff at nearby Johnson Ranch Animal Clinic, who raised funds for the lifesaving device by forgoing their annual gift exchange.
The black and white cat, who has been with her family for six years, was home alone when the fire broke out. The property sustained heavy damage, but Baby's owner, Cory Vanhoozer, tells My Fox Phoenix: "Yeah, that can be fixed. As long as no one else got hurt, that's the most important thing. Everything else is replaceable."
Although there are no official statistics, it is estimated that thousands of pets die each year from smoke inhalation. The special oxygen masks, which come in three sizes designed to help animals such as birds, iguanas, hamsters, dogs, and cats, have been responsible for saving the lives of countless pets from across the country.
If you're interested in donating/purchasing a kit for your local fire department, contact them first to see if they have a need, and then visit sites such as Project Breathe, Yuckos, Pets America, or H.E.L.P Animals, Inc. for more information.
