Britain's Oldest Cat, Margaret, Prepares To Celebrate Her 25th Birthday
Margaret
Last year, I ran a story about a pub cat named Rosie, who at 25, was thought to be the oldest living feline in Britain. The elderly kitty has since gone over the Rainbow Bridge, however, another puss named Margaret is poised to inherit the title when she celebrates her 25th birthday next week.
At 25, Margaret will be 116 in cat years, and has gone through many life changes with her owner, Sarah Dixon, now 43 (to put it in perspective, she was only 18 when the cat came into her life). Dixon tells The Daily Mail, "When I saw her, I knew I wanted her. The sign said free to a good home so I had her, we have been best friends since."
Margaret only started eating cat food within the past year, and her owner attributes her longevity to a diet of meat and tuna. She'll be celebrating her special day with a chicken breast feast.
While the feline centenarian, who shares her home with a 15-year-old cat named William, prefers to take it easy these days, she's seen a lot in her nearly nine-lives. "She has been with me through two home births and she has lived in four different houses with me. She has been part of my life for all these years and has outlived five other cats," Dixon says.
According to Guinness World Records, the current oldest (verified) living cat is 23-year-old Pinky from Kansas, while the oldest cat on record was Creme Puff, who died at the age of 38.
