27-Year-Old Kitty Named Wadsworth Could Be World's Oldest Living Cat

In January, an orange moggy named Margaret celebrated the big 2-5, and now another cat from across the pond is beating the odds by purring to see his 27th birthday.

Bedford, UK resident Ann Munday adopted Wadsworth in 1986 when he was just 4-weeks-old. She described him as a runt of the litter, who was sickly, and had to be nursed back to health. Waddy, as he is affectionately known, has been an excellent companion to Ann over the years, especially after the death of her husband thirteen years ago.

Munday admits that the elderly cat has had his ups and downs, but tells Metro, "Now he is like a little old man and mainly sleeps and eats. He has some ailments but he still gets up on my bed and the table."

According to Guinness World Records, the oldest living cat is 23-year-old Pinky from Kansas, but it's possible that at 27, Wadsworth has claimed the title. He has been treated at the same veterinary clinic since he was a kitten, and they have the records to verify his age.

I think it's interesting that out of all of the "World's Oldest Cat" stories I've covered, all have come from the UK! What are they putting in the water over there??

  1. Wow. That cat looks in better shape than most half his age. Well done, Wadsworth.

  2. Our Ed might be a close runner-up at 25 this May. This fella looks a lot better than Ed, though.

  8. It's what they are NOT putting in the water, fluoride.

  9. Do they make them get all the same shots?

  10. What kind of cat food do they eat? I really want to know! I've had so many young cats die of cancer lately and I really believe that it's the cat food or the lining of the cat food cans!

  11. blackkittylover, our veterinarian told me that it's not the food, it's an additive in the rabies vaccine that is causing the cancers and killing young cats.

  12. That's great! I'm in Canada and had a cat live to be 21. Fed her "regular" cat food, and only got her first shots. She was an indoor/outdoor cat, free-feeding, and was very healthy!

  13. we lost a cat about 4 years ago had he lived another 3 months he would have been 23- i believe that many foods and shots today are causing animals to die sooner. when i was young we fed our animals table scraps, they never got shots lived mostly outside and always lived to be over 20 now it is rare to have one live that long. waddy is a great looking cat!

I lost my beautiful Mechant Mae a few years ago and she was 25 and lived in the USA not England. I found her on the street when I was a freshman in college and that little girl moved with me wherever I went. She even walked on a leash, so when my friends and I went tent camping she was happy to come along. That girl did everything with me. She was my first pet, of a long run of many, and I dearly miss her. My current brood includes a little guy who just turned 20 and the twins who just turned 19.
