A Tribute To 'Walking Dead' Star Norman Reedus's Black Cat, Eye In The Dark

Norman Reedus with Eye In The Dark
(Terry's Diary)

It's cool to be a cat lady these days, but I'm still stoked when I stumble across the unexpected cat dude. It's not surprising when Katy Perry and Taylor Swift posts pics of their beloved felines on social media, but it's always a treat when stars like Ricky Gervais, Chris Colfer, James Taylor, and Gilles Marini post candid pics of their beloved kitties, announcing their cat man status to the world.

(@bigbaldhead)

(@bigbaldhead)

Perhaps it shouldn't be so surprising that The Walking Dead's resident badass Norman Reedus (aka Daryl Dixon) is a cat guy. When he's not busy fighting walkers and hunting squirrels with his crossbow, he's really just a sensitive soul at heart.

(@bigbaldhead)

(@bigbaldhead)

I was recently inspired by an awesome BuzzFeed post highlighting Reedus's black cat, a gorgeous specimen named Eye In The Dark. The darkly mysterious feline makes sporadic appearances on the actor's Twitter and Instagram feeds, proving that just like us, celebrities can't help but share their proud kitty pix with the world.

(@bigbaldhead)

(@bigbaldhead)

Reedus, an animal advocate who just made headlines for his stance on banning cosmetics testing on animals in the U.S., opened up about Eye In The Dark in an interview with GQ last year.

"It's just this fat, black alley cat. My son wanted a black kitten when he was a kid, and I found it in the East Village in some rescue shelter, but it was born in a box and the guy that was getting rid of it was like, "You don't want this cat. This cat's never gonna love anyone." And the first time I saw it, it was like just hissing and scratching everything it saw and now it's like this big, fat, chill cat."

(@bigbaldhead)

(@bigbaldhead)

Since animals are not affected with the zombie plague that inhabits TWD, is it too late to start lobbying for a kitty companion to accompany Daryl and the crew on their journey? They can name it after one of their fallen comrades, or just stick with Little Ass Kicker 2.

Follow Norman Reedus on Twitter and Instagram. The Walking Dead returns to AMC for its 4th season on October 13.

Burn Survivor Justin The Kitten Showcases His Recovery On The View

Justin the Kitten - The View

A three and a half month old kitten who made headlines after being set on fire in April, appeared on The View yesterday to showcase his magnificent recovery and reunite with the good samaritan who saved his life.

Damaris Sanabria rescued the cat, now named Justin, after finding him left for dead on the streets of Philadelphia. He was taken to Animal Alliance, a New Jersey based animal welfare society, where he endured many nights in the hospital, multiple surgeries, and much needed TLC, before being placed in his forever home last month.

According to View co-host (and noted cat lover) Whoopi Goldberg, Justin was attacked by "a yet to be identified maniac who the police better find before I do." According to The Star-Ledger, a $6,000 reward is still being offered for information leading to the arrest of the person responsible for the heinous act.

Despite losing most of his ears and having two-thirds of his body burned, Justin's fur has grown back with a fluffy new coat, and his owner, Kelley, says he can hear perfectly fine, especially when it's time to eat! Kelley, who has set up a Facebook page where fans can follow Justin's progress, describes the extraordinary kitten as, "full of life and full of love."

Glee Watch Alert: Brittany Serenades Lord Tubbington To "More Than Words"

Sneak Peek: "Shooting Star" | GLEE

I've been a fan of Glee's Lord Tubbington since the talented tabby first appeared as Brittany's smoking cat co-host on her talk show, "Fondue for Two." While he's made a few kitty cameos since then (a recent episode revealed that his guilty pleasure is Scientology), it looks like his moment has finally arrived, as the New Directions prepare to belt out a ballad for the beloved puss in tonight's all new episode.

Brittany and Lord Tubbington

In the sneak peek for "Shooting Star" (airing Thu. April 11 at 9/8c on Fox), cast member Melissa Benoist (Marley) reveals that Brittany will express her love for Lord T. through a rendition of the Extreme hit, "More Than Words."

LT's stunt double

Animal trainer Tasha Zamsky says that unlike most feline stars who are treat motivated, Tubbington prefers to work for love (aww!). We also learn that sometimes they have to use a creepy prop kitty as a stand-in on set (and I'm pretty sure it comes alive after everyone has left for the night).

Lord Tubbington is played by Aragon, an 8-year-old, 24 pound Bengal kitty who makes his home in Newport Beach, Calif. In addition to his acting duties, the ambitious feline is also a comedian, social activist, and therapy cat. You can follow him on Facebook here.

Nation Prepares For Cute Coma As Hallmark Channel Announces Kitten Bowl 2014

(via @littlekatmom)

Are you ready for some...KITTEN BALL??? Apparently, Hallmark Channel thinks so. On Friday, the greeting card namesake announced plans to air the first ever Kitten Bowl on Super Bowl Sunday, 2014.

The news comes as no surprise to feline sports fans, who knew it was only a matter of time before these budding cathletes started a league of their own. Tired of their second tier billing during Animal Planet's Puppy Bowl, inside reports claim that the kittens were fed up with sitting on the sidelines like a bunch of Beyoncés until their paltry 15-minute Kitty Halftime Show segment, and approached the network about getting their own game day special.

Hallmark revealed that the inaugural three hour event will be produced in conjunction with the American Humane Association, and will star adoptable kittens competing in agility competitions such as "an obstacle course of hurdles of varying heights, A-frame Alpine scratchers, tunnels, hoop jumps and weave poles." (Which all sounds well and good, but if you've ever tried to get a cat to do.. um, anything, you know we're going to be in for a comical three hours. Consider my schedule cleared.) The channel's "original movie talent" will serve as judges, referees, and sideline trainers, and viewers can also get involved by voting for the game's MVK ("Most Valuable Kitten).

The first ever Kitten Bowl will air at noon (EST) on Feb. 2, 2014 on Hallmark Channel, but if you've already found yourself panic stricken over which show to watch on the big day, rest assured. The Puppy Bowl doesn't start until 3PM, so you won't have to fight your dog loving friends for the remote.

The 21 Best Tweets About Cats Watching The Oscars

Last night's Academy Awards ceremony was filled with highs and lows, from rousing musical performances by J. Hud and Adele, to Katniss Everdeen adorably falling up the stairs to accept her award.

The  true unsung heroes of the night, however, were the brave felines who attempted to stay awake during the hours-long telecast, with some achieving better results than others.

Woman Cops To Cat Hair Eating Habit On "My Strange Addiction"

I Lick My Cat - My Strange Addiction

Last night saw the season premiere of TLC's "My Strange Addiction," the series that puts other people's odd, and sometimes dangerous dependencies on display.

The episode was particularly hard to swallow (no pun intended), as it featured a couple addicted to coffee enemas, and a woman with a compulsion for eating cat hair (I'm still trying to decide if this is better or worse than the lady addicted to eating cat food.)

You're gonna do what now?

Lisa, 43, lives in Detroit and has been indulging in her hairy habit for 15 years. It started as a way to feel closer to her pets, but became a full blown addiction two years ago when she adopted a new kitten. The cat needed surgery and wasn't grooming during recovery, so she stepped in as a surrogate cat mom.

She admits that she eats hair she finds around her apartment, but claims that much like fresh fruit, it's best right from the source. Yes, Lisa straight up licks her cat, but avoids her butt and paws because they touch the litter box.

The fur foodie eats three quarter-sized hairballs every day, which amounts to more than 3,200 since her addiction began. She repeatedly called the act of eating cat hair "relaxing" and "comforting", and describes the texture as being soft and puffy like cotton candy, while having a cotton ball taste that has less flavor than human hair.

Lisa's sister, Andromeda, is understandably troubled by her sibling's strange addiction, and confronts her about the possible health risks. She convinces her to see a doctor, who warns of long term side effects, including indigestion, bleeding, and ulcers.

An x-ray of Lisa's stomach doesn't reveal any hairballs just yet, so the doctor tries to scare her straight by showing her a picture of a bezoar taken from the stomach of someone who ingested a large amount of hair for over a year. Lisa seems to be mortified by the image, but in the end decides she's not ready chuck her fluff habit.

"Nobody lives forever and we're all gonna die at some point," she says. "It's one of the most fulfilling things in my life, and I don't plan to give it up."

My Appearance On "The Dr. Oz Show"!

Who ever thought this would happen?

If you were watching the "America's Funniest Health Videos" episode of "The Dr. Oz Show" yesterday, then chances are you saw me, the crazy cat lady named Stephanie, talking about cat litter facials in a segment about funny home remedies that actually work.

Click here to watch the video clip of me giving Dr. Oz a kitty litter facial!

I was contacted by producers in December to appear on the show after they found a post I wrote about the unusual practice in Jan. 2011. The show was taped a month ago at NBC Studios in NYC, and one of the most exciting parts was that they sent a car to my apartment to pick me up! I was told to bring two wardrobe options in "bright, jewel tones" and to do my hair and make-up as I normally would, and that it would be touched up once I got there.

In the green room, we were treated to "Dr. Oz approved snacks" like mysteriously delicious brown mini muffins and fruit on a stick. Stacy London ("What Not To Wear"), who was on the show doing a segment about beauty blunders paid us a visit, and was extremely nice, and down to earth. She even chatted with me about the Opening Ceremony cat sweater she gave to Anderson Cooper on his show the day before!

They don't bring you into the studio until your segment is about to film (and just my luck, mine was at the very end), so it was a nervous wait in the green room watching the episode on TV as it taped right down the hall. Once I got in front of the audience, Dr. Oz came over to say hello and thanked me for being there, right before the cameras started to roll. I thought it was really funny that they wanted me to rub the concoction on his face, and was excited to learn that he has 5 cats! The only thing that would have made the experience better is if they hadn't edited out me saying Catsparella!

For those asking about the kitty litter facial recipe, it's approximately 1 tablespoon of plain, unscented litter (the only ingredient should be clay) mixed with 2 tablespoons of water. Check out the video in this post for more info. I will also warn that it's very drying, so if you have dry skin, I wouldn't recommend it!

Thank you to everyone for all your kind comments about the show so far! If you missed the episode, you can watch a clip of my segment here.

"Downton Abbey" Opening Credits Set To Cats

Cattown Abbey

Masterpiece Classic "Downton Abbey" returns to PBS on Sunday night, and because none of us have already watched season 3 online *cough*, what better way to get in the mood for some upstairs/downstairs drama than with a funny feline take on the opening credits?

Watch as preparations are made for one pampered puss, over the familiar swell of the Downton theme. The only thing missing is a cat butt.

'Flipping Out' Finale: Jeff Lewis Says Goodbye To His Cat, Monkey

Life with Monkey

Fans of the Bravo TV show 'Flipping Out' know that the show's star, designer/house flipper Jeff Lewis, can be an obnoxious jerk sometimes, but that he also has a soft side when it comes to his furry family members. During last night's Season 6 finale, a collective sob could be heard across the nation (or Twitter, at least), as the Jeff Lewis Design team had to say goodbye to their beloved cat, Monkey.

The blue-point Himalayan was Lewis's first feline, given to him by his previous partner Ryan (yeah, remember him?), and the aging kitty's health was shown in rapid decline this season due to a myriad of escalating issues. Knowing that his time was coming near, Jeff brought his boyfriend Gage, housekeeper Zoila, and best friend/assistant Jenni along to the vet so they could all say one final goodbye. The end result was a heart-wrenching look at the process of letting go of a pet, and one of the "realest" things I've witnessed on reality TV in awhile. I know I can't be the only one whose heart broke into a million pieces watching Jeff stroke Monkey while telling him he loved him and thanking him for being his cat. Anyone who has ever lost a pet could relate to the cast's pain last night, and cried right along with them.

In the exclusive Bravotv.com clip above, Jeff can be seen reflecting on his relationship with Monkey, and breaking down while talking about loving him unconditionally. If you're really in the mood to torture yourself, grab a box of tissues and click here to watch the full "Goodbye Monkey" clip as it aired, but I will warn you again that it's very, very sad.

RIP Monkey! You had a great life filled with lots of love, and will be forever missed.

Jeff says goodbye

Russell Brand Treats Ellen To A Charming Video Starring His Cat Morrissey

Russell Brand's Cat Video

I've been firmly on team Katy Kat ever since the demise of the pop star's marriage to Russell Brand (I mean, did you see Katy Perry: Part of Me 3D?), but on a recent trip to "The Ellen DeGeneres Show," the comedian redeemed himself, and perhaps gave us a glimpse into why Perry fell in love with him in the first place.

In honor of Ellen's "Decade of Wonder," Brand brought along a homemade cat video, starring his beloved tuxedo kitty, Morrissey. He tells the talk show host, "I sometimes talk to actual Morrissey about cat Morrissey, and sort of blush at the oddness of it all."

The clip gives us a peek into Russell's home, which features a custom cat portrait of Moz ("because he's so adored and admired," he explains), and also shows him breaking down into coos of, "Who is my baby love, who is my baby cat?" in a scene ripped right out of my own life. He might not make the greatest husband, but at least we know he's a good cat dad.

Meet Aragon, The Real Cat Behind Glee's Lord Tubbington

Aragon

To my relief, Glee has gotten good again this season, and even recently featured the reappearance by one of my favorite cast members, Lord Tubbington. For those out of the loop, Lord T. is the oversized puss belonging to Cheerio Brittany S. Pierce, who first appeared on the Fox show in May 2011 as a guest on her talk show, "Fondue for Two" (for more, see the Lord Tubbington Appreciation Post).

Brittany and Lord Tubbington

Lord Tubbington is actually played by Aragon the Cat, an 8-year-old, 24 pound Bengal kitty who makes his home in Newport Beach, Calif. Originally named after Aragorn from J.R.R. Tokien’s "The Lord of the Rings Trilogy," his name was later changed to Aragon, an ancient kingdom and current region in Spain.

In addition to his acting duties, the ambitious feline is also a comedian, social activist, and therapy cat. Aragon's owner, CeCe Card, recently contacted me about sharing her famous feline's story with the world, which is told here through an exclusive interview conducted by freelance writer and blogger, Wylie O’Rylie of Gonzo Journalism.

Read on for more!

So Aragon, where were you born and where did you grow up?

Well, I was born in Sabillasville, MD, a small rural town in the Appalachian country. I was born into a Bengal rescue facility, where I lived for a year, until my mom came to pick me up, all the way from California. Laguna Beach was so different from Sabillasville. I got to live in Laguna for 7 years. We moved to Washington State for a little bit, but California called our hearts, and now we stay in Newport Beach, CA.

So, is there anything in your upbringing that could have prepared you for your role of Glee as Lord Tubbington?

A few things....my amazing full figure and unique sense of style, which is directly reflected in  my furry wardrobe, but I want to start off with my mother. My mom recognized my high level  of energy, and constant state of curiosity at a very young age. She knew that I had a higher calling in life, and nurtured my free spirit by taking me on long walks around the neighborhood, and I did this on a leash too.

I liked going places, I liked to explore, and discover the truth. I was given an advantage over the average cat; I get to see things, when many of my peers are idling away in nap time, dreaming about living, I'm actually out in places where many only dream of. As a result, I can hang anywhere.  Crowded malls, movie sets, airplanes, you'd almost think I was person, because most of my peers won’t do any of this.

How did you go from Laguna to the set of America’s number one show, Glee?

Well....one day we were walking on my favorite street in Laguna with my mom’s friend, animal talent scout Debbie from Paws For Effect. We were all talking, when she had an epiphany and realized that I should be acting. Within a month, I was auditioning for Glee in a group casting call, and I was selected!

I love the entire Glee cast!! It’s the puuurrrfect outlet for a kitty such as me. It has been a great way to start my career, and now I have more work coming out soon, including a Verizon commercial called “Man Dances with Cat.” I’m open-minded, BUT NEVER WANT TO BE TYPECAST, like Al Pacino, I’m always searching for something new. I have my eyes set on a Super Bowl commercial!

How do you spend your free time?

Besides eating and napping, I give cat therapy at the local hospitals, visiting kids, the elderly, and everyone in-between. I am also a connoisseur of fine dining, after all, spiritual acts of healing make a cat hungry!!

What is your heritage?

I’m a multicultural cat.  My grandfather weighed in at over 30 pounds, and our family traces its  roots all around south and Southeast Asia. Have cat, will travel I guess. I'm obviously the alpha male, as my siblings are a fraction of my size in comparison. I’m truly a citizen of the world!

Awesome, Aragon, do you have a closing message or any comments you would like to make?

Yes, I love people! And I love making people happy! Love is all that matters. I can and will share my body mind and soul with you. Life is short, so find your calling and LIVE IT!! If your passion changes, that’s o.k. too. Try something else, but don’t short change yourself. You deserve the best. One of my favorite quotes is, “Be yourself, everybody else is already taken."

To learn more about Aragon, visit his official website, or follow him on Facebook to keep up with the famous feline's burgeoning career!

Anderson Cooper Never Met A Swimming Cat He Didn't Like

Today's episode of Anderson Cooper's daytime talk show hosted a decidedly mixed cast characters, ranging from "Dancing with the Stars" cast-off Jack Wagner and his long-lost daughter, to "Extreme Pet Owners" who take pleasure in dying their pups green. The hour long spectacle also featured Henry the lizard lover, Beyonce the world's tiniest puppy, and "Must Love Cats" star John Fulton, who introduced the baffled host to San Francisco-based designer Flora Davis' line of cat hair jewelry, and to a Persian kitty who likes getting his paws wet.

Mary Ellen taught her 8-year-old cat Nymbus how to swim because she was concerned he would fall in her family's large backyard pool, and wanted him to be prepared. Veterinarian and pet care expert Marty Becker was also on hand to give his thoughts on the unusual practice, and concluded that while swimming is not suitable for all pets, it can be a great form of exercise as long as its done under supervision.

While Nybmus doesn't look like he's ready for the Cat-lympics just yet, I'm not throwing any shade his way. For all of the doggy-paddling going on, this cat can still swim better than me.

Check out another clip of Mary Ellen explaining how she taught Nymbus how to swim here.

Bravo Announces Upcoming I Can Has Cheezburger Based Reality Series

These days, if I'm not reading The Hunger Games trilogy (I'm halfway done with "Catching Fire"), you're more than likely to find me watching Bravo. I know some people groan at the mention of the network most famous for its dastardly "Real Housewives" franchises, but it's really about much more than that.

While I'm mostly done with the "Housewives" (although the commercial for the upcoming NJ season threatens to reel me back in), I'm still drawn into their fashion, design, and real estate offerings, and am unashamed to admit I'm a nightly viewer of the kooky Andy Cohen-hosted "Watch What Happens Live." I've always said that the one thing Bravo needs is more cats, and now it appears that I may at long last get my wish, along with a new favorite show to obsess over.

Yesterday, the network unveiled it's upfront schedule for 2012, which included the usual suspects, along with a few surprises. While favorites like "Flipping Out" and "Tabatha Takes Over" are set to return, a slew of new shows will also be debuting within the next year - including the announcement of one reality show called "Huh?" that left me bristling with excitement, while also scratching my head at the same time: "Ever wonder who is behind those hilarious cat memes? Bravo goes inside the office of Ben Huh and his eclectic staff at icanhascheezburger.com, one of the largest humor publishers on the Internet known for their popular LOLs and FAILs."

While this is a dream show for someone like me, I honestly can't imagine what in the world is going down at Cheezburger HQ that's so exciting it warrants a series. For me, blogging includes sitting quietly in my apartment or at the library and typing. A lot. While it's tempting to imagine that they're running their own version of "Kittywood Studios" with talent running underfoot as they create the next great Maru video, that's (probably) not the case. Plus, head honcho Huh is actually allergic to kitties in real life, so the odds of seeing any cats starring on the show are practically slim to none.

While no additional information has yet been announced about the upcoming series, including an official release date, it's just another step in the evolution of the groundbreaking online network. After five years, maybe it IS finally time to lift the veil on the house that Happy Cat built, but when "Huh?" hits the airwaves, will you be watching?

"Must Love Cats" Season 2 Premieres Tomorrow Night On Animal Planet!

Now that "My Cat From Hell" has wrapped up its second season, it's time for "Must Love Cats" to fill the cat-shaped television programming hole in your heart!

The hit Animal Planet show that introduced us to Klepto Kitty and The Rock-Cats is getting ready to premiere this weekend, and this season promises even more extraordinary cat stories from around the country. We'll also be treated to host John Fulton bringing his signature "kitty diddies" abroad, where he'll meet up with cat lovers in England and Japan.

I'd be lying if I said I wasn't extremely a little envious that John got to go on all of these cat themed adventures, which include meeting some lovely ladies I've had the pleasure of interviewing. Rumor has it, Fulton sits down with cat hair jewelry designer Flora Davis, as well as Ruth Adams, whose cat Smokey has the Guinness Record for having the loudest purr in the world!

Tomorrow night's premiere episode focuses on Japan, where John will be visiting a cat cafe, exploring Cat Island, and meeting Super Stationmaster Cat Tama (there go those jealousy pangs again..ahhhahhh). In the sneak peek clip above, he also learns the real story behind the Maneki Neko, and finds out why it is one of the most enduring and popular symbols of prosperity in Japan.

"Must Love Cats" Season 2 premieres Saturday, March 10th at 8 PM E/T on Animal Planet.

One-Eyed Cat Inspires Tribute Tattoo On "NY Ink"

Lefty Cat Tribute Tattoo

I spent some time catching up on mah programs this weekend, including the TLC reality show "NY Ink." For the uninitiated, the show documents the goings-on at Wooster St. Social Club, a real life tattoo shop located in Soho, and run by Ami James of "Miami Ink" fame. Although I'm not inked myself, I enjoy hearing the stories behind the different tattoos, and admiring the artistry that goes into them.

Last season, artist Megan Massacre delivered a very cool Victorian-inspired dog tattoo, so I was excited when a client named Erica came to see her to get a tribute tattoo to her one-eyed cat, Lefty.

Erica wasn't originally an animal lover, but got Lefty with her two roommates after finding the cat in an antique shop where the owner said they could have her for free. As time went on, the roommates moved out, and Erica was left with the kitty, who she described as a "loner" who didn't latch on. That is until one terrible day, when Lefty consumed ribbon that was accidentally left out by a new roommate (a great reminder to NEVER leave cats unattended with ribbon, yarn, etc.), and ended up with 8 feet of it stuck in her intestines. One life saving surgery and thousands of dollars later, and the pair were bonded were life.

She opted to get her tattoo in the form of a Japanese prosperity cat (maneki neko) with Lefty's gray tabby markings, because it represented coming out of a dark time into a positive one, with Lefty as her good luck charm. Erica explained to Megan how her walls were built up, but it was her one-eyed kitty who taught her how to love.

As expected, the cattoo turned out beautifully - Megan even named it one of her favorites of the season - and on her own blog, StellaBella, Erica recounts getting the piece done on the show, which she calls a "once in a lifetime experience." She also shares that she's glad she didn't wait to get a memorial tattoo, and is looking forward to having Lefty as part of her family for many years to come.

As always, if you have a cat tattoo of your own that you'd like to share, hit me up at catsparella@gmail.com!

Stephen Colbert Angered Over Nancy Pelosi's Anti-Kitten Claims

(Click here to watch if video doesn't load)

Stephen Colbert is no stranger to having cats on the set of his satirical Comedy Central show, and delighted audience members last night with a glimpse of two of his fluffiest guests yet.

The host aired House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi's anti-PAC spoof ad, before responding to her allegation that he doesn't like kittens. Pelosi's spot also admonished Colbert's practice of secretly collecting money from special interest groups for the Colbert Super PAC, and directed viewers to the Stop Colbert Facebook page, which in truth is dedicated to the 2012 Disclose Act - aimed at getting unlimited, secret donations out of politics.

"What stings is Pelosi's charge that I dont like kittens - would someone who didn't like kittens have one in each hand?" he questioned, before revealing the two tiny balls of fur hidden under his desk.

After giving the two a quick kiss and cuddle, he continued, "These are no mere props purchased right before the show. These are my beloved pets, Whiskers and.. Other Whiskers. I love these two little kittens and I will continue to do so until the moment they become cats."

Taylor Swift Brings Meredith's "Cat Fail" To Ellen

The odd (non) couple of Taylor Swift and Zac Efron recently visited The Ellen DeGeneres Show to talk about their new movie "The Lorax" - and inevitably, the topic of conversation turned to Swift's Scottish Fold kitten, Meredith.

In the clip seen here, Taylor talks about how alongside career highlights of receiving a standing ovation at the Grammys and singing with her idol James Taylor, getting a cat was one of the top five moments of her life. The singer-turned-cat-lady also shared a video (above), showing the adorable kitten taking an unexpected tumble off the couch.

Hopefully, DeGeneres' own cats weren't at home watching the interview, or else their egos may have ended up a bit bruised. The animal loving host repeatedly gushed about Meredith being the cutest cat she's ever seen - joking that she often questions her kitties as to why they aren't as cute!

IFC Comedy "Portlandia" Recruits Feline Cast Member

(Click here to watch if video doesn't load)

"Portlandia" - the IFC comedy series created by and starring SNL's Fred Armisen and Carrie Brownstein (formerly of Sleater-Kinney) - added a bit of feline levity to a recent episode, which I quickly found out when a friend frantically texted me on Friday night exclaiming, "Portlandia is doing a skit about a cat in a band!"

In between sketches skewering everything from Etsy jewelry sellers to Kickstarter, fictional band members Armisen and Brownstein decide they need a gimmick, and recruit neighborhood cat Kevin to join the mix. The trio change their name from "The Nap" to "Catnap," and quickly gain critical (internet) acclaim for their song, "Whisker Patrol." After a sold out peformance, the band members are confronted by a disgruntled fan named Gathy (played by guest star Kristen Wiig), who kidnaps the group to prevent them from going on tour.

Kevin is played to purrfection by Mac ("Most Amazing Cat"), a feline actor who got his start after being rescued from a barn. Oregon Live reports that in addition to appearing on "Portlandia," Mac also made an appearance alongside Diane Lane in the film "Untraceable," and will be purring his way onscreen in the the upcoming Amanda Seyfried drama, "Gone."

"Portlandia" airs Friday nights at 10/9c on IFC, and for a limited time, you can watch last week's full episode of "Cat Nap" (which I highly recommend you do!) here.

"This is where you come in, Kevin."

Thanks for the tip, Alison! Kevin/Mac info via OregonLive

Woman Battles Cat Food Cravings On TLC's My Strange Addiction

In case you were too busy watching the Grammy's and missed it, TLC's My Strange Addiction returned last night, with the story of a woman who is addicted to eating cat food.

Mary, 48, calls the experience of crunching on a cat treat, "A burst of flavor in your mouth." Her strange addiction began five years ago after a painful divorce left her spending all her time at home with her three cats (thanks for helping to dispel the crazy cat lady myth there, Mary). She became instantly hooked, to the point where she began consuming a staggering 900 treats A DAY, and an estimated one million since her addiction began.

The cat food connoisseur keeps the treats in her car, in her purse, and by her bed, and some days replaces human food with cat food altogether. Although she is unemployed, she spends $200 a month on kitty food for herself, and her craving recently escalated to enjoying wet food, too. She contends that the gag-worthy liquid at the bottom of the bag reminds her of chicken soup "just like Grandma used to make," (whose Grandma??), and figures that the food is healthy because it has vitamins in it (saying she has a 17-year-old cat to prove it).

Mary's brother and close friend understandably become concerned about the effect her diet is having on her health. They urge her to see a doctor, who warns her that the ingredients in cat food are made of byproducts, carcinogens, and antibiotics that could eventually kill her. After a brief physical examination, the doctor concludes that she is probably anemic, and says her elevated blood pressure could indicate the onset of kidney problems. As treatment, she is advised to return to a normal diet, and start visiting a therapist to get to the root of her problem.

At the therapist, Mary admits that much like an alcoholic, hiding her addiction has left her feeling even more lonely and isolated. She agrees to enter a 12-step program, and an optimistic update at the end of the episode indicates that she has stopped eating cat food, and now seeks out her "crunch" from healthy foods, like vegetables.

Not to make light of the situation - but who is thinking about Mary's poor kitties, here?? My cats gets mad enough when I won't share my own food with them, so I can't imagine how they would feel if I started hoarding their treats for myself.

My Strange Addiction airs Sunday nights at 10/9 c on TLC. You can watch more clips from Mary's episode, which also includes a woman who is addicted to smelling moth balls, here.
